Breaking Bread

Scripture

Acts 2:46-47 [NRSVUE]

"46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved."

Reflection

These verses are ones we’ve talked about together before, and I think they are so great at painting a beautiful picture of what breaking bread in community can look like. It’s a glance into the everyday life of the early followers of Jesus, spending time together in worship, sharing meals, and living with joy and generosity. What stands out to me is how simple it all is! There’s no sense of performance or pressure from the verse; it is just people choosing to be present with one another. The fantastic knock-on effect from living this way of life was that others were drawn in. Not because they were being persuaded or beaten in argument, but because they could see something good and life-giving taking place. It makes me think about how much of an impact living well and living faithfully can have. Being generous, joyful, and open can speak louder than words ever could. I know I can be quite introverted at times, but the idea of being part of a community like this, or even helping to create one, is something I find appealing and worth aspiring to.

Today’s quest

If the opportunity comes up today, share a meal or a snack with someone, at home, out, or even virtually! Let it be unhurried and simple, be present, and take a moment to thank God for shared time and provision.

Your reflection

There is so much power in sharing a meal with others! It’s been so nice getting to share meals together as a couple since you’ve moved to Cardiff - the very act of cooking for you and vice verse & enjoying the fruits of that together is something so special! It brings me closer to the purposes of Jesus’ and makes me appreciate how He gave His body (bread) for us to continue to enjoy communion with the Lord and with others. I’m also excited to enter into and nurture a community where this is a regular practice. I’m aware sometimes it might feel like a sacrifice - on the days it’s inconvenient, the days where even I as an extrovert want my own time at home/just the two of us. Welcoming people in can sometimes feel uncomfortable but the later reward (as we discussed tonight) can be so much greater than even the immediate reward ❤️
