Scripture
Psalm 23:4 [ESV]
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Reflection
This is a classic verse for journeys into the unknown, especially the difficult ones! How common it is to feel anxiety, fear, worry, or apprehension about taking the first step toward where we know we should go. It’s a tale that repeats throughout our lives: starting a new career, moving to a new place, or taking on a new responsibility David definitely knew these kinds of journeys well. His life was characterised by danger, loss, and uncertainty. What stands out in this Psalm is that his courage didn’t come from self-assurance, meticulous planning, power, finances, or even the latest self-help wisdom. It came from God’s presence and from the assurance that God was with him. David doesn’t say the valley disappears or that it became any less dark, only that he doesn’t walk through it alone. He doesn’t fear what has the power to harm the body, because he trusts the One who holds his life. On reflection, it’s a comfort I’ve leaned on and prayed for at different times, and it’s grounding to remember that the Lord is always with me. Like a shepherd watching over his sheep, He is present, attentive, and caring, making sure I’m alright. What a comforting thought it is!
Today’s quest
Take a moment today to name a journey you’re currently on, or one that feels ahead of you. Bring it to God in prayer and ask Him to walk with you through it, as your Shepherd.
Your reflection
“All around me and inside me feels like many swirling journeys!! My 20s has been such a time of questioning and adventuring on different paths - sometimes that’s super fun, but sometimes it’s scary! Learning to live with uncertainty has been a big part of it. But I’m reminded that i don’t actually have to live with uncertainty - I can have a firm foundation and an anchor & that’s in the my Lord God 🙏🏾 Jesus is the good shepherd, and I love that you reiterated that it wasn’t that the path was no longer dark, but that David found a new light and hope to focus on. I’m comforted by this and excited to continue journeying with my hope and faith in the Lord 🙌🏾”
