Scripture
John 7:37-38 [NRSVUE]
"37 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38 and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, "Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.""
Reflection
Earlier, we reflected on planting seeds and naming our desires, but neither growth nor desire can be sustained without water! I chose this scripture as the contextual timing of this moment is important. Jesus is speaking on the final day of the Feast of Sukkot, when throughout the festival the priests had used water from the Pool of Siloam as part of a ritual to pray for rain for the coming season, knowing their crops depended on it. It highlights how easily our needs and wants can become focused on immediate, physical provision. But Jesus reframes the thirst entirely for the people gathered there. He acknowledges that we are deeply thirsty, but reminds us that our truest thirst is not for rain or ritual, but for the living water of the Spirit. Jesus is practically saying: you are praying for God to send rain, but I am offering you something that can flow from within you. Not water drawn from the Pool of Siloam, but living water that comes from believing in Him. How incredible it is that God’s glory has been revealed to us in this way! That we are not only sustained by this living water, but can become a source of it, nourishing the seeds and people in our lives.
Today’s quest
At some point today, when you naturally reach for a drink of water, I want you to pause for a moment. Thank God for being the source of living water, and ask Him to nourish the growth in yours and other's lives.
Your reflection
“Wow, I had never come across the context of this scripture before!!! It is one of my favourite and most quoted verses from Jesus, but the context it was spoken adds so much more revelation! So often in life do I “pray for rain” - seeking comfort in worldly things, in ‘a sense of security’ when instead I can live in the full knowledge that my faith in Jesus is what fully sustains me! Powerful 🔥”
