Scripture

Isaiah 41:10-13 [CJB]

"10 Don't be afraid, for I am with you; don't be distressed, for I am your God. I give you strength, I give you help, I support you with my victorious right hand. 11 All those who were angry with you will be disgraced, put to shame; those who fought against you will be destroyed, brought to nothing. 12You will seek them but not find them, those who contended with you; yes, those who made war with you will be brought to nothing, nothing at all. 13 For I, ADONAI, your God, say to you, as I hold your right hand, 'Have no fear; I will help you."

Reflection

The start of this passage is quite simple, and yet often incredibly hard to keep in mind: don’t be afraid. I’ve been in plenty of situations where fear or anxiety has taken over, and in the heat of the moment, it’s difficult to remember those words at all. However, it would not do this verse justice to stop there or to take away the idea that we somehow should not feel fear. Instead, God tells us why we don’t need to be afraid, because He is with us! He promises strength when we feel weak, help when we do not know what to do, and support when we cannot see how things could possibly turn out well. God calls us to be brave, not because we are strong on our own, but because He is holding our hand. There’s also a contrast here that feels important. Isaiah is writing to a people who have faced powerful and confident enemies, people who appear brave, driven, and assured by the world’s standards. Yet God reminds them that strength and bravery that are not founded in Him will ultimately come to nothing. Reflecting on this makes me consider where I look for courage when things feel difficult. The world has its own ideas about bravery and strength, but this passage reminds me that true bravery isn’t self-generated. It’s found in trusting God and drawing strength from His presence.

Today’s quest

Name something you’ve been feeling afraid or anxious about and bring it to God in prayer and ask Him to hold your hand as you walk through it.

Your reflection

This week I start my new job in general practice! I’ve definitely been feeling nervous as the time goes closer - I feel like I’m stepping into a whole new unknown! But I am so grateful for the reminder that bravery as you said is not self generated but comes from trusting in the Lord! He has led me through and blessed me in so many other rotations & I can trust him again. It was great to spend some time praying over it today with Him - I allow the anxiety to turn into faith and take the excited leap into the unknown holding his hand & with a big smile! 😄
